Off season van work!

posted January 29th, 2009 by dan · 6 comments

These were my thoughts for the van; I don’t think we wanna spend more than 500 each on the van this year inclusive of the insurance, so this is what I though;

FIRST OFF WE HAVE HEAT AND THE CIGRETTEE LIGHTER NOW WORK!!!! THE HEAT BLOWS HOT STEAMY AIR! HE WAS ABLE TO FIX THE BLOWER, AND REPLACED THE HEAT CONTROL SWITCH AND WE WIRES ALL FOR 80 BUCKS!

New exhaust and muffler - said he could do it for 100-150.

new passenger and sliding door - said he could prob get a both doors for less than 100 each, the sliding door might be more and install them 50 - 60 bucks

Tune up, sparks plugs, spark plugs wires, distributor cap - said he could do it cheaper then we could, only 150-200

I think Kork knows the most about cars out of all of us so I will see what Kork thinks before I do anything….

for the inside…my brother Chris and I have a bunch of old speakers, subs and amps that we are donating to the van all we need is a head unit (radio), does anyone have one? We need a good one with sub, rear, front pre-outs, because we are wiring in some serious stuff, I also wanted to wire in the Power inverter I have so we can plug stuff in, maybe a fan for the summer rides…

I will need to buy a couple things like wiring harness/ radio install kit and an amp kit, but should be no more than 70-80 dollars

So after we do all this, lets see how much money we have spent and worse case we save the paint job for next year…what are your guys thoughts?

    I love the van!! All we need now is a mattress to lay down in the back and it can be an overnight camper. As far as rust goes, theres no way i know of fixing the holes without welding a steel plate over them. The other rust spots we’d have to chip all the rust and get rid of it all, and then paint it. You cant paint over rust, the rust just eats right through it pretty quickly. I know on steel boats they have to be constantly chipped and painted a few times a year to prevent rust from spreading. And if rust does occur, when the boat is out of water they completely remove the rusted sections and weld new steel plates on. So I’m assuming thats what we would have to do with the really rusted parts of the van. I think the plywood is fine tho.

    I think we can hold off on the doors until we go for a paint job. Face it… the van has character.
